The cold weather worried her sheep, Callie noticed early one morning. It began with a chill that roused her from her warm blankets. But her lovely companions shied back under the covers, though the sun was high into the sky. Normally, Lil Darling and Babydoll were ready to get the day long before the sun came up. They nudged at her sides and poked and prodded until sleep was a distant wish. It never bothered her quite as much as she pretended, and those little sheep never seemed bothered by her façade. Her sharp teeth and irritable grunts just weren’t convincing enough. That, or her sheep were braver than she thought.
Now, it was her turn to nudge the sheep with her nose. She pressed and pressed and pressed but they wouldn’t move an inch, much less get up for the day. The frown grew larger upon her face, teeth pressing against her bottom lip.
She tried again. Nothing.
The third time she tried, Babydoll gave a pathetic little ‘baa’ that meant she wasn’t ready to get up. It was the only reason Callie decided to relent for another hour or two. Hopefully when the sun was high in the sky, the warmth of the day would rouse those two. For now, she had some chores to take care of. So, she tucked Babydoll and Lil Darling in with excess care and gentleness.
When Callie stepped outside, the cold nipped at her nose. She was just so very lucky that her dress covered her legs and was warm and thick. She pulled her hat down on her head a little farther and kept her head down against the ravaging winds and nightmarish.
